Cutting Down Deforestation

Hello! It’s Neev and I’m back with another blog! Today’s topic is “Deforestation.”

Deforestation is when you purposefully clear any forest land. Throughout history, forests have been chopped down to make space for agriculture and animal grazing, as well as to obtain wood for fuel, manufacturing, and construction. Deforestation has greatly affected landscapes around the world as it leads to instability in the ground. Although such ground is good for building houses, it is prone to landslides.

The main causes for deforestation are as follows:

  • Industrial Agriculture: The food we consume requires space - a LOT of it. From animal grazing to growing crops, we clear so many forests to create a place for our food.

  • Civilisation: Forests are also cleared to make space for civilisation, so that we can build homes and other buildings.

  • Forest Fires: Thousands of trees are lost every year due to forest fires. Fires, whether caused by man or nature, result in a massive loss of forest cover. In 2021, 58,985 fires affected 7,100,000 acres!

Deforestation is also extremely harmful for the planet. Some impacts of deforestation are:

  • Climate Change: Deforestation affects climates in several ways. It results in high temperatures and changes in the amount and distribution of rainfall —generally creating a drier climate.

  • Increase In Global Warming: Trees are important carbon sinks and when forests are cut down, much of the carbon stored in trees are released into the atmosphere again as CO2.

  • Soil Erosion: The roots of trees hold soil in place. When we chop up trees, we make the soil loose and infertile which is harmful because it degrades the soil. When soil is eroded, it supports fewer plants - plants that can absorb CO2.

Deforestation, like all other environmental issues, is harmful for the planet and us! But nothing is impossible to repair if we all do our part . Here are some ways to reduce the impact of deforestation:

  • It gets really cold in Winter, but burning firewood excessively or unnecessarily is a primary cause of pollution and deforestation - so make an effort to be more conscious when using these resources

  • Stop consuming products with Palm Oil! Huge rainforests are cut down to get palm oil in Sumatra and Borneo.

  • This is probably the easiest thing to do! Just plant a tree wherever you go. But make sure to take care of it!
