Sea turtles

Turtle in the Reef

Sea turtles are beautiful creatures that deserve to live a wonderful life. Seas of Change has chosen to focus on three main species of sea turtles: Green, Loggerhead and Leatherback Sea Turtles.

Here is some general information about Sea Turtles:

  • Due to the collapse in populations attempts have been made at farming sea turtles.

  • Turtles have been swimming in the world’s oceans for more than 200 million years, however, their numbers have fallen dramatically in the past 300 years.

  • Human activities have had a major impact on marine ecosystems through hunting, or indirectly through habitat loss or pollution.

    • Sea turtles are light sensitive and when they are born they follow the greatest light source (usually the moon) to the water, however, due to human impact and light pollution many baby sea turtles become confused due to artificial lighting.

    • Sea Turtles are hunted for their shells and meat which is a delicacy. For hundreds of years live sea turtles were shipped to Europe for turtle soup, turtle meat is still eaten in some parts of the world.

    • Some sea turtles eat jellyfish and are known to mistake plastic bags for food.
